Understanding the Applications and Advantages of Threaded Rods

Choosing the optimal fastener for a specific task requires an understanding of the limitations and benefits of the various devices available. Threaded rods are a type of long, cylindrical fastener that can be easily identified by their characteristic threading on either end. Given their reliability and utility in a wide range of projects, they are commonly employed as an alternative to conventional bolts, screws, and studs. In this blog, we will discuss the hallmark features of threaded rods, alongside their benefits and pitfalls.

Threaded rods are similar to bolts in that they are both narrow devices that can withstand high tension. However, unlike bolts, these components typically do not include a head and are instead threaded on both sides. This unique design permits axial and radial tension and allows the interface to hold up better in the presence of excessive vibration. As a result, they are often found as elements in industrial and commercial machinery.

From a consumer standpoint, threaded rods are often preferred because of their application versatility and cost-effective nature. With the ability to augment traditional fastening devices and provide similar stability at a lower cost, many professional and novice home improvers elect to use threaded rods to save money. With the two-thread design, they can also be removed and reinstalled as needed without incident, making them a viable short-term or permanent option.

Threaded rods are typically made of steel, with variations in strength and composition depending on the application. Stainless steel and carbon-based steel are common materials for fasteners due to their durability and affordability. While these alloys offer excellent resistance to mechanical stress, they can be vulnerable to aircraft corrosion, particularly in marine or aeronautical settings. To address this issue, users can opt for protective finishes such as zinc, cadmium, or non-metallic materials like plastic, nylon, or synthetic rubber. Meanwhile, other specialized materials include brass and aluminum. Brass, a copper-zinc alloy, offers natural corrosion resistance while improving visibility and is often used in electrical projects. Conversely, aluminum and its alloys are primarily used in aviation due to their lightweight and non-reactive properties.

Like many other aircraft fasteners, threaded rods are not designed to meet the strictest precision requirements. If an application calls for exact coalescence, it may be preferred to choose a more conventional device. Another consideration that is true of all fasteners is to ensure a clean and debris-free surface prior to installation. Any damage or degradation will often portend an inadequate joint and increase the likelihood of structural failure. If excessive torsional loads are a concern, the user may also consider installing a nut on one or both ends of the device. In doing so, the rod will derive many of the benefits associated with a headed bolt.
